Compensated Work Therapy (CWT)

 What is Compensated Work Therapy?

There are two programs available within the Compensated Work Therapy (CWT) Program at the White River Junction VAMC.  They are the Supported Employment Program and the Transitional Work Program.  Through these programs, veterans can receive assistance in a variety of ways, depending upon their needs.  CWT is part of the veteran's overall recovery goals.  As such, veterans who participate in CWT need to be committed and involved in regular meetings with the team.

The Transitional Work Program is a time limited program that helps veterans establish work skills, references and some recent work history. Veterans are placed in jobs onsite at the VAMC or with businesses in the community for internships. The Transitional Work Program is sometimes thought of as a “temp to hire” program.  Veterans who are placed with community businesses for several months, without commitment, can then be hired on as regular employees of the company. Veterans and employers are both provided support through this program.

The Supported Employment Program helps veterans obtain competitive employment. The Supported Employment Program focuses on assisting veterans who are homeless or those who have a mental health diagnosis. The veterans are hired as competitive employees and are paid by the business. The Supported Employment Program offers various supports to veterans on an ongoing basis to find, obtain, and maintain competitive employment. The program also assists employers in accommodating the needs of the veterans while meeting the needs of the business.

Veterans have served in the military and have experience working with others, following directions and make great employees. The CWT program assists veterans, who have barriers to work, find jobs which are rewarding and match their interests and abilities. The goal of both programs is to get veterans competitively employed with the skills to maintain that employment long term.

How to Access Services
